Getting mentioned in ChatGPT: the evidence lies outside your website

Getting mentioned in ChatGPT relates mainly to what others publish about you. Reviews, trade media, Reddit and YouTube carry weight, but your own website remains the foundation.

Getting mentioned in ChatGPT is not something you arrange on your own site alone. AI tools lean on what the whole web says about you. The more often and the more positively others mention you, the greater the chance that you appear in the answer.

That sounds vague, but more is known about it by now. Below you can read what is associated with appearing in AI, where that evidence comes from and what it means for local businesses.

What is associated with appearing in AI

Rand Fishkin listed in October 2025 what is associated with appearing in AI answers. This is about correlation, not a proven recipe. These are the patterns:

  • Brands that appear often in documents on the web.
  • Brands that are mentioned in recent documents.
  • Positive mentions on Reddit and YouTube.
  • "Best x agency" lists that appear in many places, such as company websites, Substack and social media.

Some names also keep coming back. In the consistency study from January 2026, Smartsites appeared in 85 of the 95 answers from Google AI. The question was about digital marketing consultants with e-commerce expertise.

So answers do vary, but not at random. That is why visibility as a percentage across many runs is a reasonable measure. A position in a single answer says almost nothing.

That last point is also the weak spot. According to Fishkin, AI models still have few signals to recognise manipulation. He wrote:

unlike Google, these LLMs don't sort of have the spam and manipulation and intelligence signals to figure out when they're getting manipulated.

Rand Fishkin, SparkToro, October 2025

Put differently: where Google often recognises spam, language models do not yet have good signals for it. That makes tricks tempting, but also risky. Why we advise against them, you can read in the risks of steering AI answers with tricks.

It works the other way round as well. Fishkin described in October 2025 how a negative Reddit campaign cost the coding bootcamp CodeSmith eighty per cent of its revenue. According to research by Lars Lofgren (discussed by SparkToro, October 2025), a moderator posted on average one negative post a day, for 500 days.

Public evidence creates demand

Search captures demand, public evidence creates demand. That is the core of an analysis by SparkToro. Mentions, reviews and content on other platforms make people start searching for you.

The same applies to AI. An AI tool can only mention you if there is enough to find about you. You build that evidence with others, not only with your own texts.

It also helps to understand how people ask questions. Amanda Natividad of SparkToro wrote in February 2026:

AI visibility is an audience research problem before it's a measurement problem.

Amanda Natividad, SparkToro, February 2026

In other words: AI visibility is first a matter of understanding your audience, and only then of measuring. People describe the same problem in very different ways. Evidence in many places captures more of those variants.

Where to build evidence

Evidence outside your site comes from a few fixed sources. Choose the places where your audience already spends its attention. These are the most important:

  • Reviews: recent, substantive reviews on Google and other platforms show what clients actually experienced.
  • Trade media: an article, interview or mention in a trade journal is independent evidence of your expertise.
  • Reddit: honest help in discussions about your field produces mentions that AI tools pick up.
  • YouTube: videos with explanations or client stories produce transcripts and mentions.
  • Rankings by others: a place on an independent comparison counts for more than a list you make yourself.

Reddit is also highly visible in Google itself. In August 2026 EchoWi saw Reddit as the third organic result for best geo agencies in the US. Discussions there are therefore read by people and machines alike.

Be honest on Reddit about who you are. Reddit only works if you genuinely help, not if you sell yourself. How to recognise an independent list, you can read in how to recognise an honest ranking.

Why your website still counts

Evidence outside your site does not replace your website. Fishkin advised in June 2026 precisely not to neglect your site. Its content still influences what AI tools say about you.

Your website is the place others refer to. If it does not state clearly what you do, for whom and where, all that external evidence has no proper anchor. Make sure your services, service area and contact details are correct and identical everywhere.

That is simply good craftsmanship, as we explain in why GEO is largely just SEO.

You measure whether it works with repeated questions and your own data. Check whether your name comes back more often as a percentage, not at a position. Also track branded searches, as we show in reading AI mentions from branded searches.

Local: reviews and Business Profile

For local businesses, reviews and your Google Business Profile carry a lot of weight. In the Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors 2026 (November 2025), experts estimate reviews at 16% and the Business Profile at 12% of AI visibility. On-page factors come out at 24%.

Note: these are expert estimates, not measurements. For the local pack they estimate the Business Profile at 32% and reviews at 20%, as shown on localrankingsfactoren.nl (source: November 2025). It remains the judgement of practitioners, not a measured effect.

The lesson is simple. Getting mentioned locally starts with a complete Business Profile and a steady stream of genuine reviews. You can read more in local AI visibility with local GEO.

What you can do now

  1. After every completed job, ask for an honest, substantive review.
  2. Complete your Google Business Profile and keep it up to date.
  3. Find a trade publication or podcast where your audience is and offer a substantive contribution.
  4. Help on Reddit or YouTube with real answers in your field, under your own name.
  5. Measure every month with repeated questions whether your name appears more often in AI answers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get mentioned in ChatGPT?

By being mentioned positively and recently in many places. Think of reviews, trade media, Reddit, YouTube and independent comparisons. Your own website remains the foundation.

Is my own website still important for AI?

Yes. The content of your site still influences what AI tools say about you. It is also the place others refer to. See also: Zero click: why website traffic is no longer a good KPI.

Do reviews help you get into AI answers?

Experts rate reviews as an important group of factors for local AI visibility. That is an estimate, not a measurement. Recent, substantive reviews are valuable to clients in any case. See also: GEO agency: why most of them cannot really help you.

Should I be active on Reddit?

Only if your audience is there and you genuinely want to help. Positive mentions on Reddit are associated with appearing in AI. Sales pitches or fake accounts backfire. See also: AI visibility tool: do you really need one?.

Can I get myself into AI answers with my own ranking?

Sometimes that works, but it is manipulation. AI tools are still poor at recognising it, but that need not stay that way. It also damages your credibility with clients who see through it.

What is public evidence?

Everything others visibly publish about you: reviews, mentions, articles and videos. Search captures demand, public evidence creates that demand. It shows people and AI tools that you exist and do good work.

How do I know whether I am mentioned more often in ChatGPT?

Ask the same questions many times and count how often your name comes back. That percentage says something, a position does not. Also look at your branded searches and direct traffic.

Does this also work for a local business?

Yes, and locally your Google Business Profile is an important building block. Experts rate it highly, together with reviews. A complete profile with up-to-date details is the foundation.

Can negative publicity harm my AI visibility?

Yes. Negative mentions on platforms such as Reddit can carry through into what AI tools say about you. So keep an eye on what is published about you and respond with substance.

How long before evidence outside my site has an effect?

That cannot be predicted, and anyone who guarantees a timeframe is exaggerating. AI tools process new sources at their own pace. So measure monthly and look at the trend line.
