Tally sheet: measure your own AI visibility as a percentage
How to use the tally sheet
- Write three to five questions as your clients ask them, for example “Which physiotherapist in Soest would you recommend?”.
- Ask each question at least ten times per AI tool, each time in a new chat.
- For each question and AI tool, enter how often you asked and how often your business was mentioned.
- Read off the percentage and the margin of error. Repeat the measurement in three months.
Your tally sheet
Why ten times?
Because AI tools almost never give the same list twice. One answer is chance, ten answers show a direction. For an accurate measurement, Rand Fishkin mentions 60 to 100 repetitions per question. Read more in the ten-times rule for AI visibility.
Frequently asked questions
What does the tally sheet do?
It calculates in what percentage of your attempts an AI tool mentions your name, per question and per tool, with a margin of error. See also: Getting mentioned in ChatGPT: the evidence lies outside your website.
Is my data stored?
No. Everything stays in your browser and disappears when you close the page. Nothing is sent to us. See also: Best (local) GEO specialist.
How often should I ask a question?
At least ten times per AI tool. Rand Fishkin: ask ten times before you trust the list. The more often, the smaller the margin of error.
Should I start a new chat for each attempt?
Yes. Start a new chat every time, otherwise the AI tool remembers your previous question and that affects the answer. See also: Measuring AI mentions: branded searches and direct traffic as evidence.
Which questions should I use?
Questions as your clients ask them, in their words. Ask a few clients how they would put it to ChatGPT. See also: Position in ChatGPT: why a fixed number 1 spot does not exist.
Does it count if I am cited as a source?
Count that separately. Being mentioned in the text and being used as a source are two different things. See also: What is GEO? Mostly just SEO with a new label.
What is a good percentage?
That depends on how many names the AI tool chooses from for your question. So compare yourself with the same measurement in three months, not with another sector.
Why no position?
Because the order in AI answers is random. A position therefore says nothing, the percentage does.
Can I save the result?
Yes, with the button that copies the table. Paste it into a spreadsheet and repeat the measurement later.
What do I do with the result?
Look at which questions you are missing from and who is mentioned there. Then work on evidence beyond your website: reviews, mentions and content in the places where your clients search.
